OLDIE CLUB 2! (taking it back for the holiday season!)

OLDIE CLUB 2

May I present the second installment to oldie club! I got such a good reaction to the first one that I always had it in my mind to make a second volume and I knew it was only a matter of time. This subgenre (or whatever you want to call it) is definitely one style that I consistently check for when grabbing new (and old) music, which I cant say for every style that I am known for.
This time around I wanted to vary up the style of oldies that the club tracks use as samples. Last time Motown basically just dominated the mix which isn’t a bad thing but this time I wanted to highlight the funk side of things a bit although theres still quite a bit of Motown on here (come on, you knew that was gonna happen!)
Another hope that I had for this mix is that I would really highlight the “new” producers in the Baltimore club scene and focus more on the freshly released tracks as opposed to the classic stuff, although again, theres still some classic stuff on here.
Out of all the mixes that I’ve made over the years, these oldie club mixes have been the most enjoyable for sure. I dunno if its because of the oldies aspect or the Baltimore club or something else but it puts a smile on my face whenever I listen to the mix afterwards. I hope that you enjoy it as much as me!

Tracklisting/Track Notes

DJ Yummy – Trust
I’ll be honest, I don’t know a lot about dj yummy but I really like this track and really ive never even heard of another club track sampling gospel. Gospel music = feel good music.

Bo Bliz – Go Back
Pretty self-explanatory.

Bamabounce – Get On Up
So begins my lil tribute to james brown, Baltimore club style. While I wanted to incorporate more funk based stuff like I mentioned, I didn’t plan on this lil james brown part until I started putting the mix together and noticed these tracks. I like how it turned out though!

DJ Ayres – Give It Up Or Turn It Loose
The original and this club track are pretty amazing! For those who don’t know, DJ Ayres is part of the rub and is known for his nice remixes too!

Kazey & Bulldog – It’s Alright
Kazey & Bulldog are outta france and have released two eps that, in my mind at least, have shown that you don’t necessarily have to be from Baltimore or the east coast to produce quality club music.

Dave Nada – JB, Baby
I feel bad for only using a small part of this track cuz the actual track is a monster but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!

Scott Matelic – Ain’t Going Nowhere
Scott Matelic just released an ep of some really nice hard-hitting club music and the two oldie club tracks on there are fire! Check him out cuz I think he’s gonna make some waves in this scene.

DJ Technics – Boardwalk
I love being able to compare the original version of a track to the club remix and see how much of a difference there is and where the producer made his mark. This is the case here as DJ Technics takes the original Drifters track and makes it into an awesome club track. DJ Technics also has a really distinctive style within club music so its cool to take note of his touches in the remix.

Emynd – Be My Baby
FIRE. Seriously, I remember playing out the original Ronettes track and always wishing there was a club version of that track and luckily, Emynd has come through with the quickness! He really knows how to take the best parts of a track and stretch those out to maximum effect.

Scott Matelic – Grapevine
I have to say that Marvin Gaye has to considered one of the greatest male singers ever. There’s a youtube video of one of his performances of ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ but it’s only his voice track (i.e. the acapella) and its amazing to listen to his voice on its own. Amazing!

Wizard Of Gaz – Preacher Man
I’ll never be able to disassociate the original track here with Pulp Fiction but Wizard Of Gaz does a great job of making this a huge banger. I also like how it starts as a more chill club track but moves into rave madness as the track progresses. Check out the full version for what I mean.

DJ Rod Lee – Family
I had to put a lil cheese in the mix just to spice things up! We are family!!!

Tittsworth – 4 Tops
This is an older Tittsworth track but I’ve always really really liked it and have actually put it on a previous mix. I always like remixes that feel like a completely different track and this is the case with this track. Tittsworth really gives this track its own identity so it doesn’t really rely on the original as much.

Emynd – Standing
Another great Emynd track. Can’t get enough.

Cobra Krames – I Think We’re Alone Now
Ok, a lil more cheese ain’t hurt no one! I do like how Cobra Krames used the original version of ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ and not the Tiffany version. Makes me feel less soft playing it out. :D

Bo Bliz – This Magic Moment
Bo Bliz is Emynd’s dj partner and has a really nice set of tracks that, when used properly, will really work well for any dj!

Emynd – But It’s Alright
Do I really need to say anything more? Just enjoy the track!

Mike The 2600 King – Hold Up, I’m Comin’
This track puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it. Everything about it is great: from the chopped up horns to the additional vocal samples to the progression of the track. I really love it!

Archie Bell & The Drells – Tighten Up (Bobby LaBeat Remix)
I felt it was appropriate to end the mix with a classic funk track remix. Mophono does a funk cover of ‘Tighten Up’ that is really awesome as well. Check it out if you can!

Blasts From The Past! III (REGGAE EDITION) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blasts From The Past! III (Reggae Edition)

We're in the midst of winter where I am and every year when its like this, i make an effort to listen to as much "sunny" music as possible. Well this new edgemukation mix is my sunny gift to you in this cold cold weather!

This mix has actually been a long time in the making. I'm more on the hiphop side of things in terms of djing but as ive collected music and grown as a dj, this mix has been a goal of mine and im happy to have completed it!

This is actually the third volume in this sample subseries and I really like it, mostly cuz I love reggae and dancehall. One aspect ive always loved about reggae is that it almost all comes from this tiny island in the Caribbean and while its certainly been influenced by the rest of the worlds music, to a large extent, its stayed mostly true to its roots, at least in my opinion. Ive also always liked how much reggae and dancehall references and samples other styles.

As far as the hiphop side of this mix, if you know your hiphop history at all, you should know that hiphop basically owes a huge part of its birth to reggae and Jamaica so it’s easy to see how hiphop uses so many reggae samples.

I don’t know about you but I really like these styles of mixes but that’s probably cuz im a huge music nerd and my only hope is that you are one too!

Enjoy!

tracklisting/track notes

cannibal & the headhunters/ini kamoze – land of 1000 dances/here comes the hotstepper

classssssssssic!

max romeo/jayz – chase the devil/lucifer

max romeo is classic reggae. lucifer is a classic kanye beat. I only played like 5 secs of the max romeo track but the whole track is nice. Its also been sampled by the prodigy for a classic rave track. Oh the nerdery!

delfonics/johnnie osbourne/fugees – ready or not

I like how this lil trifecta turned out. Technically the fugees sampled the delfonics (and enya) but johnnie osbourne did his cover in the 70s and its nice as well.

the techniques/major lazer – you don’t care/cant stop now

mm mm mm major lazer er er er! Both of these tracks are pretty amazing. Oh and major lazer = album of the year. No joke.

dawn penn/alicia keys – you don’t love me/no one

No no noooooooo! Another classic reggae track. The verse by damian marley on the remix of no one is super nice too, although I do prefer the other reggae remix (f/ junior reid) of no one. This remix also samples another classic reggae track but I thought it fit more nicely with the dawn penn original.

alton ellis/sean paul & sasha – im still in love with you

Excellence all around! Its rare that a cover lives up to the original and a sean paul cover to boot! I just hope all those 14 year old girls eventually find out that theres an original version to the sean paul track. But regardless of what you may think of him, sean paul kills it on this.

sister nancy/lauryn hill – bam bam/lost ones

This is more of an interpolation than a straight sample but I say it still applies (and really, what I say goes, you know?). The thing I love about bam bam is that regardless of the venue or the crowd that youre playing at, you can drop this track and it will work. I don’t care if youre at a dubstep rave trance fest, you drop sister nancy and watch as some dude with dreads walks up to you to give you a pound.

junior reid/the game – one blood/its okay

junior reid is one of those classic artists who you can recognize after hearing like 3 secs of his music. I especially like his lil adlibs, almost as distinctive as barrington levy. Oh and that dre beat is bananananananananas! If you know me at all, you know ive got a serious affinity to all things west coast and even though im not into street rap and im very far from a gangsta, the game is my man!

zap pow/collie buddz – last war/come around

zap! pow! One thing about me is that im terrible at catching the words in a song. Even in plain English. Needless to say, reggae is basically a foreign language to me sometimes. Case in point: for a long time I thought collie buddz was saying “finally the earths come around!” and I was like “wow, what a socially conscious reggae track”. Yup.

ini kamoze/damian marley – world-a-music/welcome to jamrock

I wont front, every dj and their moms has done this mix before I have. But really, its such a nice buildup that I don’t regret the mix any time I do it. Its almost like if you are gonna play welcome to jamrock and you don’t start with world-a-music, youll get some saltiness directed your way. Just sayin

tenor saw/mr. vegas – pumpkin belly/lean wit it

I love the bassline on pumpkin belly. So ahead of its time. And by the way, mr. vegas rules. Seriously dude is best.

tenor saw/fu schnickens – ring the alarm

classic reggae and classic old school underground! I love the fast rapping too!

Judy mowatt/the supremes – stop in the name of love

This is the only mix that’s backwards, outta necessity really. But seriously, reggae versions of almost any track always works and I aint mad at that.

michael Jackson/shinehead – billie jean

Its safe to say that this is one of the most well known known reggae covers and I felt it fit to end the mix with this. I love the good bad and ugly whistling at the beginning too! Really, every track should have good bad and ugly whistling at the beginning.
