welcome to volume 6!!!
a lil while ago i was talking music with a buddy of mine and he mentioned how he was really into what he called 'wuss rock'. even though the name was a joke, we figured out that we both were into this kinda music which seems to have a ton of names/labels and yet no official one. i guess you could call it post rock, or mod rock, or synth pop or hipster rock or hipster disco or something but the name isnt really that important. the music is. (for the record, i just called the mix indie cuz i couldnt come up with a better name.)
while everyone and their mom at least knows about hipsters, the actual music behind the scene is actually worthwhile, whatever your thoughts are on the scene itself.
anyways, even if the actual sound is pretty soft compared to a lot of stuff im into, i really like it and i know that if people look past the media hype or whatever, theres a lot of cool stuff in this genre.
so let me present you with this mix. its about 35min and kinda goes with a consistent style with some range of disco and of rock.

i could go on and on about this kinda stuff because of the hype around this kinda music but ill just let the music speak for itself. so put on your vans, tight jeans, v-neck sweaters and ironic glasses cuz youre gonna be dancing to this! no joke!!!!! enjoy!

probably one of the most legit groups in this collection, especially since theyve been around for a while. the actual track is a perfect starter to the mix and thats really why i chose it.

lykke li - little bit (css remix)
if there ever was a place where hipsters were actually birthed, it would be sweden. lykke li is from sweden. nuff said.

ratatat - shempi
ive only really heard instrumental stuff from ratatat (not to say they dont use vocals) and from what ive heard i really like it. their use of synths are amazing.

sneaky sound system - when we were young
ah yes, non-sensical lyrics centred around children. i really dont get the focus on that and i shake my head at the lyrics in some of these tracks but the sound of that chorus is thumbs up.

vampire weekend - kids dont stand a chance (chromeo remix)
i always love when theres two tracks that have an element that sounds exactly the same but its not really a sample. its pretty obvious that this vampire weekend track shares a bit with dont stand so close to me by the police. just in case you didnt notice i threw in the police track :D

matthew dear - don and sherri (hot chip remix)
this is my favourite track on the mix. hot chip is pretty crazy cuz theyre so far-reaching and diverse. i love that. again with the goofy lyrics though. but the mix into this worked very well so yay for that.

empire of the sun - we are the people (shazam remix)
this track and the next one are my lil mini-aussie section. empire of the sun are a cool group but im really all about shazam. this producer is doing things the right way: through good music. no hype, no stunts, just proper music. check out his myspace for other awesomeness.

bag raiders - shooting stars
see above. also, bag raiders = yes.

cystal castles - crimewave
so this is a hit, is there anything i need to say?

the golden filter - solid gold
cool track. apparently this group really likes the word gold.

lifelike - so electric VS lykke li - breaking it up (pocketknife remix)
i couldnt resist doing a lil blend or two on this mix and im quite happy with how this turned out. it aint perfect but the minimal sound of pocketknife's remix really go well with those synths from lifelife. i think this is probably one of the main highlights of the mix.

hail social - all night (benny brows remix)
big ups to flaming hotz records! this is where the mix tends to go into more rocky stuff and im all for that. all night!

santigold - lights out (dj mehdi remix)
dj mehdi is vastly under-rated. ill admit i used to kinda pigeon-hole this guy into one sound but hes done a lot of varied stuff and i really like it. there are bucket-loads of remixes of santigold tracks but this one is by far the best one.

la roux - quicksand
had to throw in some french connection. if sweden didnt exist, hipsters would move to france. just sayin'. allez les bleus, allez les bleus!

joe and will ask? - take me away
this is a borderline banger but it blended so well with the last track that i had to throw it in.

shinichi osawa - star guitar
another amazing track. this is epic in its purest form. the whole track is just crazy. and an excellent way to end the mix on a high note. *UPDATE* so after chatting with my brother, he reminded me that this track is actually a pseudo-cover of a chemical brothers track of the same name. the more recent version is more energetic but the chemical brothers version is awesome as well, check it out if you have the chance.

hello hello and welcome back. its been a while. both myself and sharps have been busy gigging and living life so we've had to put this lil series on hold. but dont fret any longer cuz here is vol 5.5! im calling it just a half-volume cuz its a shorter mix just to tide you over till the next one im putting out in just a couple weeks or even soooner. i did this all in one take so it aint my smoothest mix, so be easy!


anyways, so its the second edition of blasts from the past, where i incorportate the original tracks that have been turned into samples for more current songs. i really like the tracks in this mix and i hope you do too!

i remember some people kinda blasted nas for using such a well-known blues track for this track but really, its muddy waters! and nas has always done that. but muddy waters is a great blues artist and both these tracks rule. i love olu dara's interpolation of muddy waters.

stevie wonder - pasttime paradise/ coolio - gangsta's paradise
how many of y'all didnt know this was a sample? im from the era where gangsta's paradise is real nostalgic so even though its a lil cheeseball, this is dope! stevie wonder is the man. probably my best mix on here too.....

bill conti - redemption/ t.i. - whatever you like
i really like how the t.i. track didnt go overboard with its use of redemption. kept it nice by just using the synths at the beginning and left out the obvious rocky parts. pretty standard track by t.i. but i like it.

marvin gaye - youre all i need to get by/ method man - all i need (razor sharp remix)
what can you say about marvin gaye? and this method man track is awesome. i love it when a mc really expands their sound/content and makes tracks like these.

tracy chapman - fast car / nice & smooth - sometimes i rhyme slow
easily my favourite nice & smooth track. in fact i would go as far as to say that its better than tracy chapmans original. but thats just cuz i like to go against the grain. great tracks both of em!

kenny rogers - islands in the stream / pras - ghetto superstar
ahem. do i really need to explain myself and will it really change your mind from thinking im a giant dork? dolly parton!!!

dr. buzzards original savannah band - sunshowers / m.i.a. - sunshowers
i love discovering samples that i didnt know existed. i remember watching boyz in the hood for the 3rd or 4th or 5th time (top 5 all time!) and in one of the scenes in doughboy's house, this track is playing on the radio! it blew me away cuz i had seen the movie before arular came out but after it was released i watched the movie and made the connection. so good!

hossam ramzy - khusara khursara / jay-z big pimpin'
big thanks to sharps for hooking me up with this sample! greatest jay-z track ever, hands down. just awesome. and its cool to see how timbaland tweaked the sample.

I've been back from Peru for a bit now, trying to digest all these reggeton tracks i picked up, finally put a few of them together in this nice little mix. If you've never been to a country like Peru, its a bit different down there. People sell pirate CDs on the street all over the place. I don't even know if its possible to buy legit CDs down there, everyone just buys these pirate cds. And of course these CDs are mostly made from crappy mp3, so the sound quality isn't always there, but thats not really the point of this stuff. I mean a lot of the production is pretty cool, but people aren't listening to it for a hi-fi listening experience thats for sure.
Anyways, grab this mix, stick it on your ipod and rock it on your way home on a sunny afternoon. Feel the sweet and steady 'dum ka dum ka". Pretend you are in a tropical place muy caliente.

EDGEMUKATION MIX SERIES VOLUME FOUR!!!!!!!

ive always had a special place in my heart for oldies and as ive grown as a dj, ive not only explored certain genres of music, particularly baltimore club but ive also researched music history and tracks from the past. as luck would have it, i quickly noticed a sub-genre within baltimore club, where oldie hits, mainly motown, were remixed or sampled for now classic baltimore club tracks.

well, allow me to present to you my take on oldies club music.

ive tried to include some motown stuff but include other styles as well, and as a result the mix is a lil longer than the 20 min mark me and sharps had set for ourselves. i have a feeling that we're never really gonna follow that time limit. :). enjoy!!

this track is incredible. frankie vallie is incredible.
ive had this remix for a while and ive always wanted to set off a mix with it. its not a typical oldies hit but its got so much soul, i love the way it sets off this mix.

tittsworth - ez
when i first started djing seriously, i told myself that i would never re-use a track in a mix i made. well ive broken my promise cuz i HAD to include this track (as well as one later). this is sunday morning music at its best. incredible remix, incredible producer.

a-trak - sir duke
i really like a-trak's production style. hes really clean and you can feel his hiphop/turntablist roots, almost sounds like its done live. also, stevie wonder!

dj eli - papa
probably the busiest track on the whole mix. a lot of chops but i really like the direction dj eli took with this. plus it leads into the next track so well.

kw griff - respect
classsssssic. it sounds so fresh but its a pretty old remix. really shows the rich history of baltimore club for sure. plus those chops get me every time!

emynd - reach out
emynd is definitely one of the top club music producers right now. his style when it comes to oldies club is definitely something im about. his additions are soooo smooth and really build up the tracks to a superb level.

tittsworth - georgia
i really wanted to include a more mellow track, especially after the hype of the last 3 tracks. actually i was talking to sharps about the kinda juxtaposition (big word!) in baltimore club. you have these hard club beats but sometimes the sample sources are pretty mellow or soulful tracks. i think some people find it kinda odd but i love it and really i think that range of emotion in baltimore club tracks is what makes the genre so amazing.

another producer that really is making big splashes with his remixes. also, willie hutch!!!

dj debonair samir - i can dance
chop heaven. this track was just released a lil while ago and im a fan.

dj technics - baby, baby
dj technics is the king of the oldies club music. hes got buckets, buckets of amazing tracks. you could make a mix of just his stuff and it would be fire. no joke. all three of his songs here show his varied ability to kill it.

dj technics - mr. postman
another classic! this is the second time ive use this track as well but im not mad. its worth it. i actually got a request from a girl for this track once at a party. i thought about asking for her hand in marriage.

dj technics - pillow talk
this track melts my heart of ice. i could listen to this track all night long.

scottie b - mo club medley
this is the king of all tracks really. scottie b has a pretty minimalist style in my opinion, even for baltimore club, and it shows in this medley, but i think its perfect for the varied acapellas hes tossing in there. listen to this a few times and appreciate the subtle touches!


and just for a nice taste of classic rhythm and blues, heres some ruth brown. sooooo sweet. (doesnt really relate but who cares)

switch is such a versatile producer its crazy. hes got his hands in so many styles i imagine other producers listen to his stuff and just cry outta defeat.

basement jaxx - wheel n stop
this track features an emcee named serocee and he kills it. this track really grew on me and now i love it. basement jaxx is more known for their house type stuff but i like this, hope they make more of it.

count of monte cristal - dibby dj
i remember sharps telling me that the vocals on this was total ragga, i think thats what he called it. the ep that this was released on has a 1000% batting avg. every track is dope.

se:sa - like this, like that (sinden & count of monte cristal remix)
im not sure who se:sa is but i love this track. its so bouncy! and when the peak hits its so good! again, count and sinden are fire. pure fire.

machines dont care - soundboy massive
the first time i listened to this track i hated it. then i heard it on a club system and now its one of my favourites. listen to this loud. please.

sharkslayer - bad ding
sharkslayer is part of top billin' and i swear im in love with every track theyve made. this is part of that love!

south rakkas crew - mad again (dj sega remix)
the most remixed song of the last while for sure. ive heard a ton of them and dj sega's is still my favourite. his ability to add rhythm throughout every element of the track is incredible.

mavado - weh dem a do (remix)
i actually dont know who did this remix, so if you know, fill me in. its awesome though, nice subtle touches.

nadastrom - the way you movin
nadastrom has some crazy tracks but i love how chill this one is. its pretty different in my opinion from the rest of their stuff but i really like it. girl i know you got some issues!

when sharps came to me with the idea of a mix series based on informing people of genres of music they may not know a lot about, one of the first ideas that popped into my head was a sample-example type mix. its been done before but i thought that i would try to place my own mark on this type of mix. ive always been big into the history behind tracks and so i hope that maybe this will interest people who have always wondered where or how sampling is done. this is definitely a type of mix that i see myself making multiple editions of. enjoy!

ive always had a special place in my heart for the fugees and ive always loved their appreciation of culture from all over. doo-wop cannot be messed with.

freddie scott/biz markie - got what i need/just a friend
biz markie was the first hiphop mc that showed me that hiphop could be funny and didnt always have to be serious serious. the original is sooo soulful too.

creative source/the game - id find you anywhere/wouldnt get far
when i find the original sample for a track i always love discovered where the actual vocal snippet is from in the song and this is a great example of that. and i love the west coast.

betty wright/mary j. blige - clean up woman/real love remix
just an awesome awesome sample. its sooo good.

mtume/biggie - juicy fruit/juicy
its kinda funny how many biggie tracks are basically biggie just rapping over a funk or soul song. i mean theres so lil done to alter the sample but then again, who needs any more when the original is so smooth.

lou reed/atcq - walk on the wild side/can i kick it?
best bassline ever. hands down. every frat boy in the world knows this tribe track so you can ask them about it!

george clinton/snoop - atomic dog/whats my name
g-funk is amazing. and i love how not only is the track sampled but the vocals are interpolated and changed to fit the chorus of the snoop track. whenever i listen to this track i picture nate dogg c-walking.

david mccallum/dr dre - the edge/next episode
im not sure how many people realize that next episode is based so much on this david mccallum track. im also not sure how many people realize that missin linx came out with 'm.i.a.' a year before next episode and use the same sample. ive heard people say dre stole the idea from them. who knows.

kool & the gang/public enemy - jungle boogie/welcome to the terrordome
i thought it would be cool to show a more subtle sample. of course the pe track has a bunch more samples in this track but i thought the kool & the gang one stood out.

isley brothers/public enemy - fight the power
i dont think this is a direct sample but the tagline is definitely the same. isley brothers ruled things.

curtis mayfield/kanye - move on up/touch the sky
i wanted to put a more popular track that everyone would know so those who werent necessarily deep into hiphop could still enjoy this.

rick james/busta - ghetto life/in the ghetto
i just got my hands on this rick james track and its actually the inspiration for this whole mix. why? cuz rick james is AWESOME. seriously, hes a badass and still awesome. and i love how busta half-timed the beat. and not to toot my own horn but i like how my mix came out on this, almost melding them into one track.
